Confident, calm and ready for teaching,

with support every step of the way

Support that meets you where you are before you feel overwhelmed

Whether you’re about to start your first year, or you’re already a few months in and feeling stretched, the early stages of teaching can feel relentless.

You might be loving working with your students but questioning yourself and feeling exhausted by the size of the workload, or unsure how to make teaching feel sustainable long-term.

I can help you to...

Build professional confidence so you feel like a teacher, not a student pretending to be one.

Stop feeling overwhelmed by mastering routines to create a more manageable workload.

Walk into each week feeling prepared, not panicked, with clear, realistic planning systems.

Feeling overwhelmed before you’ve even found your feet?

I know how you feel!

The early years of teaching can feel very exciting. You finally get to put everything you have learned into practice with your own students. However, I also know about the long days, the nagging self-doubt, and the quiet pressure to get everything right. I’ve been there and I’ve also spent decades supporting teachers as a school leader.

Over the years, I’ve seen talented, caring teachers lose confidence not because they weren’t capable, but because they didn't protect their energy, trust their judgement and build calm routines alongside the demands of the job.

First Year Foundations exists so you don’t have to figure this out the hard way or believe that feeling overwhelmed is just “part of teaching.”

Who Is This Programme For?

  • This is for you if… you have just started your teaching career and want to feel more grounded and prepared.

  • This is for you if… you are working in a classroom in a primary, intermediate, secondary or early childhood setting.

  • This is for you if… you’re an experienced teacher moving schools, or to a new country, and finding the adjustment harder than expected.

  • This is for you if… you’re a few months in and already feeling tired, stretched, or unsure of yourself.

  • This is for you if… you care deeply about being a good teacher but don’t want it to come at the cost of your wellbeing.

  • This is for you if… you want practical tools and resources along with consistent, steady support, not pressure, hustle, or unrealistic expectations.

Hi, I'm Carolyn

I have spent over 30 years working in education as a classroom teacher, school leader and coach, and I’ve supported hundreds of teachers through the early, often overwhelming years of their careers.

I’ve seen first-hand how easily capable, committed teachers begin to doubt themselves, not because they lack skill or passion, but because the demands of the job can be relentless.

Everything I do is guided by a simple goal: helping teachers feel calmer, more confident, and clearer in their work so that they can teach at their best.

This is backed by my...

leadership experience, including roles as a Principal, DP and SENCo

Ongoing work with early-career teachers across multiple school contexts

Professional coaching training and international certification (ICF ACC)

Testimonials From Teachers

Who Have Worked With Me

"A happy and successful career"

"Carolyn's coaching has enabled me to grow from a young beginning teacher to an experienced team leader.

Her holistic approach was exactly what I needed to develop into the confident teacher I am today. She suggested useful techniques and used self awareness strategies that allowed me to develop management skills. I learnt to prioritise my own well being in order to be at my best. Teaching can be an extremely hard job it can consume you and suck out all your energy but coaching with Carolyn got me back on top of things.

It is possible to have a happy and successful career in teaching."

Anna Casley

Team Leader Y3/4

"Confidence and a sense of calm"

"Fresh out of university and experiencing first hand, the expectation of a teacher compared to the realities of a teacher, was overwhelming at one stage.

I was extremely thankful for Carolyn’s coaching sessions, as they were invaluable for me as Beginning Teacher. Anyone who knows Carolyn is drawn to her kind-hearted nature, genuine concern for others and ability to make you feel valued as a teacher. Her holistic approach to teaching allowed me to leave each session with a greater sense of clarity, confidence and a sense of calm.

To this day, I continue to apply her philosophies to my everyday teaching practice."

Melanie Sadaraka

Classroom Teacher Y5/6

" I was able to see in front of me again"

"Before my coaching sessions I had recently returned from overseas travel and had just started teaching again. I found myself feeling lost and confused as to where I was heading or what I wanted to do with my life. I felt silly at the start of the coaching process, because I don't like talking about myself or my feelings, but as the sessions went on I found this confidence building up inside. I was able to see in front of me again.

The coaching sessions helped me to reflect and set realistic goals that I could achieve. The sessions made me feel good about myself. I now know the pathway I want my career heading in. Carolyn is an amazing person, who always makes you feel valued and comfortable."

Frequently Asked Questions

How much time will this take each month?

The core of First Year Foundations is designed to fit around real teaching life. You can access the resources in your own time and return to them whenever you need. This programme is built to support you, not add pressure. Live workshops are held on the first Wednesday of each month at 7pm, and there will also be an optional Sunday Reset call once a month.

You can take what you need, when you need it, depending on the time of year and what you need support with. Some weeks you might dip in briefly for a specific resource or strategy, and other weeks you might spend longer planning or reflecting. It’s flexible and responsive to your workload.

Do I have to attend all the live sessions

Attending the live sessions gives you the opportunity to ask questions that are relevant to your particular school context, however all live sessions will be recorded, so if you are unable to attend you can watch or listen at a time that suits you.

What if I’m a part-time teacher, or have a busy timetable?

First Year Foundations works whether you’re full-time, part-time, relief teaching, or in your first permanent role. The strategies and systems are designed to be adapted to your context, not a one-size-fits-all timetable.

Is this programme only for brand new graduates?

Not at all. The First Year Foundations programme is ideal if you are:

- In your first few years of teaching, or

- New to a school, system, or year level, or

- Returning to teaching after time away and wanting to rebuild confidence and routines, or

- An experienced teacher who is teaching in a new country

What if I fall behind or can’t keep up?

There is nothing to “fall behind” on. This is not a race or a checklist. You can move through the programme at your own pace, revisit resources when needed, and use what is most relevant for you at different times in the year.

Will this help with classroom management, planning and workload, or is it more about wellbeing?

Both. First Year Foundations is designed to support you as a teacher and as a person. (There is a list of monthly topics on this page if you scroll up). You’ll gain practical classroom strategies, planning systems and workload tools, while also building confidence, calm and professional resilience. The two go hand-in-hand in real teaching life.

Is this programme only for teachers in New Zealand and Australia?

While the programme has been designed with New Zealand and Australian teachers in mind (i.e. the school year starting in January/February), the strategies and frameworks are relevant for new teachers in most education systems and can be adapted to your local context. I will be starting another cohort in August for teachers in countries that begin their school year in August/September, so make sure you contact me to go on the waiting list and be notified nearer the time.

Why should I invest in this programme instead of just figuring it out as I go?

You absolutely can figure it out as you go, and many teachers do.
But doing it alone often means unnecessary stress, trial-and-error, and feeling like you’re constantly behind.

First Year Foundations gives you:

- Proven systems

- Practical tools

- And calm, experienced guidance
So you don’t have to learn everything the hard way and you don't have to feel alone.

This Is Your Moment to Set Yourself Up Well

Once the year begins, it only gets busier.
First Year Foundations is your chance to start feeling prepared, supported and confident, before the rush takes over.
